This character was created using a full game production pipeline, blending realism with dark storytelling. I wanted to portray a warrior beyond redemption a samurai who has faced countless battles, his humanity slowly stripped away and still standing up to fight.
The Oni mask plays a key role in his story nailed into his own flesh, it serves as both a shield and a curse. Once a symbol of protection and intimidation, it now binds him to the rage and sorrow of the lives he’s taken.
I drew initial inspiration from a concept piece on Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/7248049394756019/) particularly for the mood, and demonic aesthetic. From there, I made creative changes to shape my own version of the samurai enhancing the armor’s storytelling, pushing the texture breakup, refining the lighting for a darker cinematic tone, and amplifying the symbolism of the Oni mask as a mark of eternal torment.
As a Character Artist, my focus was on achieving believable material definition and narrative through detail — worn steel, blood drips, torn fabric , each surface telling a fragment of his past. I paid special attention to the silhouette, ensuring it carried weight and presence, and used Cherry Blossom, Mist and Grass for a Dramatic Scene in Marmoset to drive emotion and atmosphere rather than pure realism.
